Needy Kids Benefit from Family Group Foundation Mentorship Program

Hundreds of children from poor families have benefited from a mentorship program sponsored by the Family Group Foundation.

Some 359 children in secondary schools, 169 of them girls, are currently enrolled with the program. Another eighty have completed their secondary education bringing the total number of beneficiaries to 439.

The Foundation has committed Ksh56 million to the program covering scholarships and the mentorship program.

Besides academic excellence, the initiative also aims at equipping beneficiaries with vital life skills like financial literacy and career planning to shape them into well-rounded individuals.

Last week, the Foundation organised a three-day mentorship event for the beneficiaries in Kasarani, Nairobi. The event dubbed #layingthefoundation provided an opportunity for the children to interact with mentors from diverse professions as well as life and career guidance experts.

The Family Group Foundation manager Jacqueline Mathaga said that beneficiaries gained practical

insights to strengthen their academic and personal development.

“We realized that many of the kids we are assisting lack exposure to vital skills like financial literacy, career planning and entrepreneurship. Providing them with access to education through scholarships is just one part of the story. We need to build other positive aspects of character to enable them chart a solid path in life,” said Ms. Mathaga.

Family Group Foundation is a non-profit social investment organization established in 2012 by Family Bank Limited, Kenya Orient Insurance Limited and Daykio Plantation Limited. It mainly focuses on education, health, agribusiness and entrepreneurship.

The Foundation’s education projects are aligned with the international sustainable development agenda. Education is critical in achieving the global Sustainable Development Goals agenda unveiled by the United Nations in September 2015. SDGs are a set of seventeen key goals to end poverty, protect the planet and ensure prosperity for all by 2030.
